E-2 Approvals keep increasing in China
China’s citizens do not have an active treaty with the U.S. and therefore they do not qualify for an E-2 investors visa. Citizens from countries without an E-2 visa treaty usually apply using through their second nationality (if they have a dual citizenship from an E-2 treaty country) or by participating in a citizenship by investment programs (e.g. Turkey or Grenada) to obtain an eligible citizenship for the E-2 visa. Even though China is not part of the E-2 treaty countries, residents have found different ways to get access to an E-2 visa. Some of the most common strategies include participating in a Citizenship by Investment Program to obtain Turkish, Grenadian or other passports that qualify for the E-2 visa.
China’s E-2 approvals continue to grow and we would not be surprised if the trend continues. Most of the recent E-2 visa approvals have come from the Shanghai and Guangzhou consulates. In 2019, they averaged 7 monthly approvals compared to their usual 5.
