What Makes a Successful Franchise Business Investment?

By: Jack Findaro, Product Development Director of Visa Franchise

Visa Franchise advises clients who are looking to invest in a franchise business, and in turn, become a franchisee running their own company. Clients from around the world rely on the expertise of Visa Franchise to locate the franchise business investment that best meets their goals. After analyzing over 500 different franchise businesses in a wide variety of industries, Visa Franchise has been able to identify four criteria for a potential franchise investor.

1.A Strong Product or Service Offering that is Differentiated from Competitors

Is the product or service offering superior in quality or price? Is the business differentiated from competitors? When analyzing franchise investments, the business offering will be researched in depth by Visa Franchise. A franchise business, or any business in general, needs to offer a product or service that the market needs. Customers must be willing to pay money to obtain the product or service.

2.Growing a Business in a Growth Industry

Are the individual franchise business units increasing their sales? Is the total number of franchise units expanding or contracting? Is the overall industry experiencing growth? These are all key questions to consider before investing in and owning and operating a franchise business in the U.S. The answers to the questions are typically quick indicators that give an overview of the health of the franchise and will increase the likelihood of a successful franchise business investment. The vast majority of businesses that Visa Franchise advises our clients to invest in are growing in a growth industry.

3.Strong Management Team

A crucial facet to consider when investing in a franchise is the management team. The success of any franchise is strongly correlated to the success of the franchise’s management team. The franchisor has a number of responsibilities, including, but not limited to: ensuring the strength of and protecting the brand, strategic planning, onboarding of new franchisees, assisting in various aspects of development, leading marketing campaigns, and maintaining relationships with suppliers. A franchise’s management team can play a vital role in the success or failure of the franchise units. Additionally, all the franchisees of a franchise system benefit when the brand presence grows and improves. For these reasons, Visa Franchise actively works with franchises and continually seeks out new franchises that have management teams that are trustworthy, enthusiastic about their brand, offer strong support to franchisees, and maintain a strong growth mindset.

4.Substantial Franchise Investment Return

At the end of the day, investing in a franchise that allows for a substantial franchise investment return is the number one priority for the vast majority of franchise business owners and potential franchisees seeking a franchise business investment. Many factors impact the investment return and time frame to recover the initial investment.  These include:  total investment amount, location of the unit, sales growth, and margin of the product or service. Every franchise business is different and requires various factors to be considered before making the investment. When working with clients, Visa Franchise takes into consideration their capability, experience, and size of investment in order to ensure that they select the best possible franchise option suited to their unique, individual situation.
